You bring out a dusty old law volume (or, for close-up performances, a pocket U.S. Constitution). "Sorry, but by law I'm required to perform a card trick for you at this point in the show."

The book seems to guide you step-by-step through a very funny process wherein a volunteer chooses a card (you never need to touch the deck) and, by law, you are unable to find it in increasingly funny ways. 

Finally, you reveal that the reason the trick isn't working is because there isn't really such a law—you made the whole thing up. In fact, you're not even holding a real book, because every page... and here you flip through the book, showing the audience that instead of words every page has a picture of the selected card!
